History of Dollard-des Ormeaux
Dollard-des-Ormeaux, usualy referred to as D.D.O. or simply Dollard, is an English-speaking suburb of Montreal in Quebec, Canada, about 30 minutes out of the downtown core.
The city was named after Adam Dollard des Ormeaux, who died in a battle with the Iroquois while averting a siege of Montreal. His importance to French Canadians has been a debate.
The city was merged with the city of Montreal in 2002 and became part of the borough of Dollard-Des Ormeaux–Roxboro. When residents voted, they chose to leave Montreal, and the city became a separate entity in 2006.
Dollard-des-Ormeaux was originally a commuter town (primarily residential) in the 1960s. There were only a few souls 1960, and 10 years laters, there were 15,000.
One of the mains streets, Anselme-Lavigne, in the Westpark neighborhood, is named after a farmer who sold his land to “Belcourt Construction Company”. Many streets in the Sunnydale neighbourhood, ex: “Sunshine” and “Hyman”, are named after members of the Zunenshine family, owners of Belcourt. There is a mixture of residential and commercial properties. St-Jean and Des Sources boulevards are its main commercial arteries, and are represented by two lines in the city’s logo. The three circles , from left to right, are the St-Jean department, the Westpark department and the Sunnybrooke department. The three circles and two lines in the logo represent the city’s geography and creatively spell out “DDO”.
The City Hall was located on Sources boulevard in the early 1960s, in a house, and then moved to a farmhouse, 4 years later.
When Canada’s centennial anniversary came about, the town decided to create “Centennial Park,” featuring a man-made lake and hills. It was suggested to use this project for a reservoir for rainwater drainage, as the city was forced to expand drainage pipes. However, the project had problems became a scandal and a major drain on resources. It was finally completed in the 1970s, of course over budget.

What to do in Dollard-des Ormeaux
Centennial park is a great place to enjoy nature. Just go for a walk and enjoy the breeze. Watch the ducks play in the water way.

The Marché de l’Ouest is an outdoor/indoor seasonal type of market where you can find a café, a bakery, a coffee roaster, a pizza place, a cheese store, a sausage store, and more!
